Prof. Ruth Towse BA (Hons), MSc (Econ), PhD is Professor of Economics in the Creative Industries and Co-Director (Economics) of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management at Bournmouth University. She is also Professor Emerita of Erasmus University Rotterdam. She held previous posts in economics at Middlesex University, Thammasat University Bangkok (Thailand), the Institute of Education, University of London, City University (Department of Arts Policy and Management), the London School of Economics and at the University of Exeter.
Ruth Towse’s main area of expertise is in cultural economics with special reference to the economics artists’ labour markets and copyright in the cultural industries. She has published widely in academic journals in these fields and has authored several books, as well as editing several major collections. Her latest book is A Textbook of Cultural Economics published by Cambridge University Press in 2010.
Ruth Towse was Joint Editor of the Journal of Cultural Economics from 1993–2002 and now serves on the Editorial Board. She was President of the Association for Cultural Economics International (2006–8) and President of the Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (2004-2006). She is on the Editorial Board of the Review Economic Research on Copyright Issues.
Ruth Towse has lectured, given seminars and participated in conferences in most European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and Korea. Funded research includes: Arts Councils of Great Britain and of Wales, South West Arts, Leverhulme Trust, ESRC, the UK Intellectual Property Institute, the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Industry Canada and the Spanish Authors’ Society.
Since 2008, Ruth has been a member of the Copyright Expert Panel advising the UK government Strategic Advisory Board on Intellectual Property Policy (SABIP).
